100 Artisans Earn National Recognition Through RPL Certification
100 artisans today received nationally recognized qualifications under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, at a graduation ceremony held at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

The graduation ceremony, held under the theme "Empowering Workers and Promoting Decent Jobs through Recognition of Prior Learning," recognised experienced artisans from nine trades whose skills were acquired outside formal education. The trades included Fabrication and Welding, Tailoring and Fashion Design, Carpentry and Joinery, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics, Electrical Installation and Electronics, Plumbing, Bricklaying, Automobile Mechanics, and General Fitting.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Director of Administration George Masinga described the RPL programme as a game-changer.

"This is an excellent turning point as for many years many skilled workers lacked formal qualifications despite their expertise. RPL programme addresses this gap by assessing and certifying their skills thus opening doors for opportunities," he said.

ILO Country Director for Malawi and Zambia Wellington Chibebe commended the Government of Malawi, the TEVET Authority and development partners for championing an initiative that recognizes competence regardless of how skills are acquired, saying it directly supports the aspirations of Malawi 2063.

TEVET Authority Executive Director Elwin Chwembu Sichiola reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to promoting quality, industry-responsive skills development, emphasizing that the RPL programme advances dignity, inclusion, lifelong learning and equal opportunity for all Malawians.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Square Innocent Saenda from Mulanje said the certification would unlock employment, contract and business opportunities that many skilled artisans had previously missed due to the lack of formal qualifications.
The RPL programme was introduced in 2023 and has assessed more than 500 artisans
