Students at Lilongwe Technical College are set to gain greater exposure to renewable energy technologies following a donation of a SOLTRAIN+ Solar Thermal Training and Demonstration Rig at the college.
The equipment was donated by the Southern African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) and the Institute for New Technologies (INTEC) with funding from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
The equipment provides a practical learning platform where students can develop skills in the installation, operation and maintenance of solar thermal systems, helping to bridge classroom learning with modern technologies used in the energy sector.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, the guest of honour, Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr Jean Mathanga MP, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and developing green skills that support Malawi’s development aspirations under Malawi 2063.
“The Government of Malawi remains committed to strengthening the country’s energy sector and promoting sustainable energy solutions that contribute to national development,” she said.
SACREEE Executive Director Kudakwashe Ndhlukula said the training rig, with a capital cost of more than US$16,000 and a total investment of over US$20,000 including delivery to Malawi and training, will strengthen practical skills in solar thermal technology.
“The equipment is designed to equip technicians with the professional skills to safely install and maintain solar thermal systems,” said Ndhlukula.
Receiving the donation, Lilongwe Technical College Principal Sugzika Mvalo highlighted the importance of training students using modern equipment, emphasising, "it ensures skills acquisition that is in line with industry requirements."
As a champion for partnerships in TEVET, Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Honourable Joel Chigona, MP, was actively present at the donation ceremony.
SACREEE and TEVETA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2025 to strengthen collaboration in solar thermal training and renewable energy skills development.
