Chitipa based youth empowered for self-employment and national development

TEVETA Board Chairperson, Gilbert Chilinde has urged newly graduated youth of Chitipa to utilise their skills for self employment and national development.

Chilinde made the call at the graduation of 56 youth who were trained at Khama Community Skills Centre in Chitipa.

"TEVETA’s mandate is to ensure that every Malawian, regardless of education level, background, or location, has access to quality and relevant skills training. I urge you to use the skills gained to establish your own business ventures and for national development," he said.

The graduates were trained in Tailoring and Fashion Design as well as Fabrication and Welding.

Senior Chief Mwaulambia emphasized that vocational training is key to reducing unemployment. He particularly commended female trainees who pursued Fabrication and Welding and Fabrication, saying their achievement would inspire more women to enrol into traditionally male-dominated trades.

Khama CSDC Director Mr. Dickson Mambo indicated that Chitipa has a growing demand for skills training and committed that he is ready to continue working with TEVETA and the council.

"There is huge demand but our current limitation is space as our centre is not big enough to accommodate all who desire skills training. I request the council to help us," he said.

Thembi Community Initiative, a Chitipa based Non Governmental Organisation, provided sewing machines to some of the new graduates.
The trainees were trained for 6 months from July to December 2025. They were today awarded with certificates in line with TEVETA's mandate of providing certification for those who have successfully completed training under the Informal Apprenticeship Programme.
